Introduction
Overview
The Northern Territory Department of Education with the support of INPEX’s Ichthys project, have developed this Skill Mastery video resource in partnership with Charles Darwin University’s Northern Institute.
The project seeks to foster an understanding of Northern Territory industry employment through videos that explore three levels of related job roles around:
- expertise in trade based skills and knowledge
- career progression and
- industry and workplace expectations.
To do this we have showcased employees in the workplace: discussing their employment, industry and demonstrating their skills.
The videos feature people in real life work contexts in eight employment industries at three career levels: beginner, intermediate and expert/master. The eight employment industries showcased are: Hospitality, Maritime, Civil Engineering, Automotive, Aged Care, Construction, Early Childhood and Conservation Land Management.
Teacher guides and transcripts of the videos are included to support educators to scaffold learning opportunities for students.
This Skill Mastery resource has been designed for remote Aboriginal learners, 14-25 years old, who are undertaking vocational education and training or Employment Pathways. It may be used in any teaching context if thought suitable. It is intended that these video vignettes further learners understanding of mastering skills on the job which may include progressing to further formal training.
How to use
The Skill Mastery resource is a suite of eight videos representing eight employment industries. Each industry page on the website features a main video and six section videos. For ease of access, the section videos are chapters from the main video. For example, educators wanting to focus on safety in the workplace could look at the Skills to be Safe chapter of one or more industries without looking at any of the main videos.
The Teacher Guides are designed to assist educators in utilising the Skill Mastery videos. Suggested questions to initiate discussion before, during and after watching the videos, a visual matching activity, a glossary and additional materials are provided for each of the videos. Educators are encouraged to use these guides to plan learning opportunities using the videos. Videos, Teacher Guides and Transcripts can be downloaded for offline use.
The Overview Teacher Guide will direct educators how to approach the concept of “skill mastery” providing definitions of mastery levels the videos present. Educators should use the Overview Teacher Guide as an introduction to the videos.
